Thomas keeps Vets on course for first victory

DAVID ISSOTT scored two first half goals, but it was goalkeeper Rupert Thomas who secured the first three points of the season for Newark as they won 2-1 at home to Calverton Miners’ Welfare in the East Midlands Veteran’s Central Championship League on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas made a number of vital saves, including keeping out a second half penalty, to ensure the Vets got the win after last week’s narrow opening away defeat at Netherfield.

A confident first half performance, where Newark could have been further ahead than 2-0, was followed by a second half where sloppy play from the home side, combined with a much-improved display from Calverton, ensured the game was contested until the final whistle.

The Vets are next in action on Sunday October 6, when they are away at early league leaders Nottinghamshire.
