FORMER Notts County goalkeeper Joe Searson produced two splendid saves in the penalty shoot-out to warm the hearts of the Newark Flowserve faithful on a freezing night at Dunkirk in the second round of the Notts Senior Cup.
Flowserve were cruising to a 2-0 victory after a first half strike from leading marksman Kyle Dixon before he turned provider to set up Ben Hutchinson for another in the second period but hosts Dunkirk, who are riding high in the East Midlands Counties League, aptly showed great spirit to pull two goals back in the final 15 minutes of the game and take the game into the extra period.
Substitute Elliot King added a third for the visitors, but Dunkirk – who had been reduced to ten men after Tobin had picked up a second yellow – netted again from the spot to take the tie into a shoot-out, with the spectators collecting holding their breath which had previously been floating up into the cold night air.
Dixon slotted this first effort home and then Searson pulled off the first of his heroics. The next three went in, with Danny Meadows and sub Jammy Lloyd netting for Flowserve but, when Searson did the trick again to deny another Dunkirk penalty, it was left to Greg Smith to hit the winner and he nearly took the net off with his effort.
