The Newark Veterans battled to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Old Dogs, who were top of East Midlands League Championship Central coming into this fixture.
A tight first half saw Ollie Gee have the best chance for the Vets, when he took a slightly heavy touch when through on goal. Skipper Jono Wright was also on the receiving end of an ugly challenge from the Old Dogs centre forward – and the subsequent yellow card could easily have been a straight red.
Old Dogs took the lead midway through the second half, when the flight of a long range shot deceived the otherwise impeccable Rupert Thomas in the Vets goal.
However, the Vets hit back almost immediately, when a intricate passing move involving Wright, Graham Parker and Dave Issott saw the latter score a deserved equaliser.
The result leaves Vets in fourth place in the league, just three points off top spot.
Newark Vets are next in action on January 26, when they go to Arnold for the return fixture against Old Dogs.
